Why coaches won't tell you these numbers

Quote-after-a-call lets a coach price by the budget you reveal. That's the industry default, and it's why the same PCC coach charges one client 300 USD and another 550 USD for the same hour. The ranges in this calculator come from published market data, so you walk into the first call knowing the number before they ask about your budget.

Three things move the price and one thing doesn't. Credentials roughly double the rate at each ICF step. Your seniority moves it: a VP pays more than an EM for the same coach. Geography halves it: CEE runs at about half of US rates. What doesn't move it: the actual quality of advice for your specific problem. That correlates with whether the coach has lived your role, and the certificate is silent on that.

Five red flags before you pay anyone

  • A rate far under the fair band for the seniority they claim. A 90 USD "executive coach" is a different product wearing the label.
  • No published pricing anywhere. You should not need a discovery call to learn a number.
  • Prepay pressure: 6 to 12 months upfront, before a single session together.
  • No specifics. "I work with leaders at top companies" and no names, roles, or outcomes.
  • No cheap way to test the fit. Serious coaches offer a free or low-cost intro session.

Frequently asked questions

How much does coaching cost per hour in 2026?+
The ICF Global Coaching Study 2025 puts the all-coaching average at 234 USD per hour globally and 297 USD in North America. Executive coaching in the US typically runs 200 to 600 USD per hour. In Central and Eastern Europe, business coaching for managers runs 120 to 245 EUR and executive coaching 180 to 330 EUR per hour. Life coaching sits far lower, usually 75 to 250 USD.
How much should I pay for an executive coach?+
It depends on four things: your role, your territory, the coach's seniority, and how long you commit. A VP in the US working with an ICF PCC coach should expect 300 to 600 USD per hour. The same profile in Central Europe: 180 to 330 EUR. The calculator on this page computes the fair range for your exact combination, with sources.
Why do coach prices differ so much?+
Three drivers. Credentials: the ICF ladder roughly doubles the rate at each step, from 150 to 300 USD at ACC to 500 to 1,000 USD at MCC. Client seniority: the same coach charges a VP more than an EM because the budget is bigger, not because the work is harder. Geography: CEE rates run at roughly half of US rates, and virtual coaching has compressed the gap further.
Is a more expensive coach better?+
No. Price tracks credentials and brand, not fit. An ICF MCC certificate proves coaching method, not whether the coach ever held your job. For engineering leaders, a practitioner-mentor who ran an org through the problem you're facing often delivers more per euro than a pricier generalist. The mentor vs. coach comparison at marian.coach/mentoring-vs-coaching/ covers when each one fits.
What are red flags when hiring a coach?+
A quote far below the fair range for the seniority they claim. No published pricing, only quote-after-a-call. No specifics about who they worked with and on what. Pressure to prepay 6 to 12 months before a single session. And no way to test the fit: a serious coach offers a free or cheap intro session.
How much does an engineering leadership mentor cost?+
Public pricing at marian.coach: 430 EUR per 60-minute session pay-as-you-go, or 2,580 EUR for a 6-session first quarter. Companies pay the same rate. Intro session free, prices without VAT. That sits above the CEE executive coaching band and inside the US mid-range.
